GRANITE QUARRY

When the word granite is said out loud, it brings to mind sayings, such as solid, forever, unyielding and set in stone. When you we the words luxury home, multi million dollar estates we think of granite.

Granite Quarry

Granite quarry is a large pit or some wide open excavation from which granite is removed from. To obtain granite from a quarry either cutting, digging or blasting process is used. This process of obtaining the granite or sand stone is called quarrying. Once quarrying is done, the processing of granite starts. The four operations that are involved in the processing of granite are:
  • Dressing
  • Cutting/ sawing
  • Surface grinding and polishing and Edge-cutting-trimming.
Once the processing is over, the granite is ready for further use.

Quarrying of granite in India is conducted in Rajasthan, Bangalore, Chickmaglur, Hassan, Kolar, Mysore, Mandhya Tumkur, Bellary Raichur districts and at many other locations.

There arenot many quarries that have have advanced mining machinery, such as compressors and drilling machines for drilling and blasting, cranes for lifting large blocks, and dampers and heavy trucks for transport.Today the mining and processing of the mining granite is done manually. Even the drilling and channeling are done by hand with chisels and hammers.
Granite has been extensively used as a dimension stone and as flooring tiles in public and commercial buildings and monuments. With increasing amounts of acid rain in parts of the world, granite has begun to supplant marble as a monument material, since it is much more durable. Polished granite has been a popular choice for kitchen countertops due to its high durability and aesthetic qualities.

Engineers have traditionally used polished granite surfaces to establish a plane of reference, since they are relatively impervious and inflexible.

In the world of sports, curling rocks are traditionally fashioned of granite.

Granite is currently known only on Earth where it forms a major part of continental crust.
Granite occurs as relatively small, less than 100 km² stock-like masses and as large
batholiths often associated with orogenic mountain ranges and is frequently of great extent.
Small dikes of granitic composition called aplites are associated with granite margins.
In some locations very coarse-grained pegmatite masses occur with granite.

Granite has been intruded into the crust of the Earth during all geologic periods;
much of it is of Precambrian age. Granite is widely distributed throughout the continental
crust of the Earth and is the most abundant basement rock that underlies the relatively
thin sedimentary veneer of the continents.

Sandblasted concrete with a heavy aggregate content has an appearance similar to rough
granite, and is often used as a substitute when use of real granite is impractical.

AFTER THE QUARRY
After the quarry, it is time to make this granite into the beautiful product that it is. After cutting and laminating the edges of the granite slab, a series of wet polish pads are run across the dull surface. The polisher can use many different grade pads to bring the granite up to a lustrous shine. Each granite varies by the density of the stone choice.

There are many different kinds of edge treatments.

  • Polished
  • Chiseled
  • Half and Full bullnose
  • Bevel and Ogee

The edge treament shown above is a standard flat polished edge. This is one of the more refined finished edges for granite. For a more rustic feel a chiseled edge is a beautiful touch.

These are photographs of a natural product and the color representation
is dependent upon the monitor type and color.
